Retired U.S. Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson has issued a stark warning regarding the vulnerability of American naval assets, specifically claiming that a single Russian "Oreshnik" missile could catastrophicially neutralize a Ford-class aircraft carrier in under a minute. His assessment suggests that the sheer kinetic energy and speed of this new weapon renders traditional defensive measures effectively obsolete against a direct strike.
The "Oreshnik" is a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 10 (over 7,600 mph), making it nearly impossible for current radar and interception systems to track and engage in time. Unlike conventional missiles that rely on explosives, the Oreshnik can utilize Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs) to deliver kinetic warheads that strike with the force of a meteorite.
Military analysts note that the "30 seconds" timeframe likely refers to the terminal phase of the missile's flight, where it descends vertically upon its target at hypersonic velocity, leaving no window for the ship's Phalanx or SeaRAM defense systems to react. If accurate, this capability would fundamentally alter naval strategy, as the U.S. Navy's primary method of power projection—the carrier strike group—would be defenseless against land-based hypersonic batteries.
This development is part of a broader shift in global military technology, where offensive hypersonic capabilities are currently outpacing defensive shields, creating a "deterrence gap" for major superpowers. Russian officials have previously touted the Oreshnik as an "unstoppable" response to Western escalation, aiming to signal that no target remains out of reach.
Colonel Wilkerson, a former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, frequently comments on the risks of overextending U.S. military power and the dangers of underestimating the technological advancements of near-peer adversaries. His comments highlight a growing debate within the Pentagon about the future viability of massive surface vessels in an era of precision hypersonic w@rfare.

Segundo este artigo, os EUA não têm defesa contra os mísseis russos, que podem facilmente afundar seus porta-aviões em qualquer lugar do mundo.
